The top two finalists in each of seven categories will be invited to showcase their work at MAX 2007 in Chicago, Illinois, October 1-3. Blue Eye
The Blue Eye table has a glass surface and overhead camera, a projector and a mirror underneath the table. By placing an object on the table surface you can copy it to the screen beneath. Once the image of the object is imported, “images can then easily be moved, stretched and even animated by a user.”
This table is similar to the upright Microsoft TouchLight technology which lets users move and manipulate three-dimensional images with their hands. We also posted about the iBar interactive bar table, which is geared more towards design and pleasure, letting users create patterns of glowing light when touched. The DeLightTable by Thomas Gardner, an ‘interactive coffee table’, is also similair to the iBar interactive table.

Adobe CS3 Interactive Billboard
In conjunction with the launch of Adobe's CS3, this interactive mural installation was designed by Brand New School for Goodby, Silverstein & Partners of San Francisco. Using some fairly sophisticated programming and tracking hardware, peoples' movements are recorded and translated into an animated mixed-media mural that reflects the creative license afforded by the new Adobe CS3 software package. From left to right, the mural evolves from simplicty to complexity as more elements are introduced.

Rembrandt one of the greatest Dutch painters and he recorded his own likeness in at least 75 paintings, drawings, and prints, which date from his earliest years in Leyden to the last year of his life in Amsterdam (1625-1669). The dozens of painted examples clearly had many purposes, ranging from theatrical displays of emotional expression in the youthful works, to the most candid self scrutiny in some of the late canvases. A few self portraits were intended for great patrons, others no doubt for family members, and some must have been painted with no other viewer in mind, like pages in a diary.
In Rembrandt's earlier years as an artist he first stressed action, drama, and high contrast between dark and light. Rembrandt had no restrictions with his space, he was not afraid to let the colors seam to seep out of the frame, not holding anything in place. In his live time he would changed the way many artist painted. For example, while many other Dutch painters emphasized things such as realistic appearances of their models, he tried to portray them more in a poetic manner than realistically. By using extreme light-to-dark values he created interesting effects not used by many other painters.
Rembrandt was a petty brilliant painter. This varies noticeably from the warm, subdued light and broad brushwork that differentiate the Ruts Portrait from the other Rembrandt, Self-Portrait. His later portraits are more subtle and sharp, as we see with the self-portrait. The striking contrasts in lighting and the detailed depiction of the mixed textures are characteristic of Rembrandt’s earlier works. Two years prior to the portrait, Rembrandt had to declare bankruptcy. This could also be Rembrandt attempting to disillusion the public opinion, forming it to oppose his actual situation. He stole from his rich wife’s inheritance to support his expensive taste for art and other material objects. Behind the artist, there lies a subdued and dark background, so that warm gold and vermilion colors of the artist’s garments hold the illuminating value within the painting.
This kingly portrait of a sober assessment of his appearance at the age of fifty-four strikes the viewer with its glazed shine and its thick impasto pigments. The viewer senses a feeling of uneasy confrontation from this seated man and the shadowed glare that he casts off. However the size and monumentality combined with painting technique make this piece, beyond doubt the most impressive of Rembrandt's self portraits. The paint surface is extremely complex in which the paint was applied in several successive layers. Rembrandt recorded light and textures with the objectivity of a still-life painter, an approach that makes the expression of his eyes and mouth all the more compelling. While Rembrandt’s Self Portrait did not depict the true to life state of the artist at the time, it definitely did depict the artist’s talent embodied into the grandeur of Rembrandt in the portrait. His kingly view of himself reflected histories view of him as an artist. His face is frozen with an ill-mannered expression.
Interesting Fact
In an article published on September 16, 2004 in The New England Journal of Medicine, Margaret S. Livingstone, professor of neurobiology of Harvard Medical School, suggests that Rembrandt, whose eyes failed to align correctly, suffered from stereo blindness. She made this conclusion after studying 36 of Rembrandt's self-portraits. Because he could not form a normal binocular vision, his brain automatically switched to one eye for many visual tasks. This disability could have helped him to flatten images he saw, and then put it onto the two-dimensional canvas. In Livingstone's words, this could have been a gift to a great painter like him, "Art teachers often instruct students to close one eye in order to flatten what they see. Therefore, stereo blindness might not be a handicap — and might even be an asset — for some artists." However, among Rembrandt's greatest talents was an ability to create the illusion of full volume, the perception of which requires healthy stereopticon vision.

Microsoft Expression Session 2007
I had the pleasure of attending the last session of three Microsoft Expression Session events in New York City on January 30. Well for those who don’t know, the Expression suite consists of four products: Design, Blend, Web, and Media. The event took place at 7 WTC on 51st floor that as you see it has a great view over New York City.
The morning session was essentially an overview of the suite by the product managers from Microsoft. They showed some impressive demos including a Burton Snowboards WPF application create by Beau Amber from Metalliq. It was interesting to see someone else from the Flash community working in WPF.
Expression Web (the Dreamweaver competitor), which was just released, is the professional version of MS Front Page with lot more feature. The UI for the application looked very neat, straightforward, flexible and useful. The visual CSS editing was particularly advance and impressive, that as a default it appears on the right side of the application. The best feature I think was attributes panel on the left side. Basically each time you click on any HTML tag/object it gives you list of that tag/object attributes. I remember it was a very useful feature on Visual Basic and VB.Net. They gave me a free copy of Expression Web ($79 Value) and I'm installing it now, and I'll try to post more detailed comments about it later. But I still like my Dreamweaver more.
The beta version of Expression Blend (their Flash competitor) that they showed us was still somehow incomplete. By the way their both MacBook Pro with Windows Vista crashed during the rendering. Beau Amber was so embarrassed. Anway the UI looked overloaded and confusing. Actually I guess the wanted to copy the UI of After Effect 7 (for Mac) but the couldn’t. Anyway I had hard time with it.
I will post my comment on Expression Media and Design later. By the way I had the pleasure of talking to Jeff King and CSS legend Eric Meyer. They really did a great speech. However I missed Chris Bernard speech because I was listing to Beau Ambur. I was there from 9am to 6pm and in general it was a great event.

Apple has confirmed an optimized but full version of the OS X operating system will run on the iPhone, but further distinction between the operating system (OS X) running on Macs and iPhones has not been officially explained. Third party applications are currently limited to a "controlled environment".
The iPhone has a scheduled release date of June 2007, pending Federal Communications Commission approval, and will be available from the Apple Store and via Cingular. iPhone has a planned launch price of $499 (USD) for the 4 GB model and $599 (USD) for the 8 GB model, based on a two year service contract. The iPhone is a Quad Band GSM phone, though Jobs mentioned in his keynote that Apple has a "plan to make 3G phones" in the future. Apple has filed over 200 patents related to the technology behind the iPhone.

Apple iPod + Subway Map
Well well well! Something new again for iPod! In the big cities especially like here (NYC) almost everyone use subway systems and on the other hand iPod is become very common device for people around here, so it seems like such a great idea to digitally shrink maps of major subway systems and put them online so people can download them to their iPods, isn't it? Putting the subway maps onto your iPod isn't all too difficult. First you'll need an iPod Photo. If you can't find the iPod photo on the Apple website (http://www.apple.com/), it's because all iPods (not counting the iPod Mini and Shuffle) are color versions which come with photo support. For more information and download the maps for free visit http://www.ipodsubwaymaps.com/. They are available for the iPod nano, the iPod photo (4G) and the new iPod video (5G). Download the maps from iSubwayMaps. Just go to iSubwayMaps FAQ for install instructions. It is quite easy. The maps are free, please donate via PayPal to the author if you like them. The author has been under attack lately, from transit authorities in New York City and San Francisco, who have issued cease and desist letters for alleged copyright infringement. Apple also made him change the name of his site from iPodSubwayMaps.com to iSubwayMaps.com. All for offering a nice free service to people!
Driving Directions on Your iPod
There is a new service called iPodiWay that makes it easy to put Yahoo! maps on your iPod.
I have been using a shareware application called PodQuest $9.95 OS X only, for years to put text directions in the notes section of my iPod.

SiteAdvisor
With the threat of spam, spyware, and pop-ups lurking around the Web these days, it's tough to know which sites have them and which don't. The folks from SiteAdvisor run tests regularly so you can see which sites to avoid before you go to them. You can even get a full security analysis of particular sites with a click of your mouse.
GooglePreview
When you perform a regular Google search, your keyword turns up a list of links that fit your search, along with text snippets from each of the pages. But if you have the GooglePreview extension, Firefox will display a screenshot of each page in the list so you can see it before clicking the link.
Dictionary Tooltip
When surfing the Web, sometimes you'll come across words you don't know the meaning of. Instead of reaching for a dictionary or heading to its online equivalent, use Dictionary Tooltip. With this extension you only need to double-click a word to bring up a window with pronunciations, definitions, and thesaurus entries.
IE Tab
Do you have a favorite site that only shows up correctly when you use Internet Explorer? Great for both users and Web developers who want to see how their pages look in Microsoft's browser, this plug-in lets you open a link in a new tab that uses IE Web standards and architecture. (I have to say that this one is not always working perfectly, so if you want both engine in one browser you have to download Nestscape.)
Separe
Those who use a lot of tabs when they browse the Web will love Separe. This simple add-on lets you keep tabs tidy by adding a separator to the tab bar. In addition to being able to divide up your sites into groups, you can click on the seperator to get a thumbnail of the pages in each tab so you can find what you need quickly.
Adblock
Do you have a favorite Web site that takes a long time to load because of certain ads or images? With the Adblock extension, you can pick and choose which content elements of the page will load so your favorite site comes up quickly every time.

The Crucible
Find out more: The Crucible is a play written by Arthur Miller in 1953. It is based on the events surrounding the 1692 witch trials of Salem, Massachusetts. Miller wrote about the event as an allegory for McCarthyism and the Red Scare, which occurred in the United States in the 1950s. Miller was himself questioned by the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1956.
The play was first performed on Broadway on January 22, 1953. The reviews of the first production were hostile, but a year later a new production succeeded and the play became a classic. Today the play is often studied in high schools around the world.
The play has been adapted for film twice, once by Jean-Paul Sartre in the 1957 film Les Sorcières de Salem and nearly forty years later by Miller himself, in the 1996 film of the same name; Miller's adaptation earned him an Academy Award nomination. The play was also adapted by composer Robert Ward into an opera, which was first performed in 1961 and received the Pulitzer Prize.
